About the Italo-Canadian Club of Kingston

The Italo-Canadian Club is a reception, conference and banquet facility. We believe beautiful events can be accessible at any budget. That is why we remain one of the most affordable banquet halls in Kingston. Whether you are planning a small intimate affair or a large-scale celebration, we are the perfect choice for your special day. Known for amazing food, Italian hospitality, and a beautiful ballroom, we have grown since 1963. The original club building and the land we are on was purchased and built by the Italian community. To this day much of the work is done by our Italian volunteers. We remain dedicated to being a social center for Italians and Canadians.

Carnival Masquerade Dinner and Dance

Are you looking for something special to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year? We invite you to experience the magic and mystery of a Venice carnival at night at our masquerade ball dance and dinner, only at the Italo Club.  Your ticket includes the carnival masquerade dinner and dance and will make the perfect Valentine’s day gift. Also a great idea for a girl’s night out!

Dinner will be prepared in-house by our red-seal chef. Our dance will include a mix of classic Italian music to transport you to Venice, as well as modern favourites. You’ll feel transported to Venice with traditional Italian street vendors, carnival games and the atmosphere of our Italo-Canadian Club.

About the Carnival of Venice

The Carnival of Venice (Italian: Carnevale di Venezia) is an annual festival held in Venice, Italy. In 2020, the Carnival of Venice will begin on Saturday, February 8. The carnival will end on Tuesday, February 25 with the Christian celebration of Lent, forty days before Easter. The end of the carnival is marked by Shrove Tuesday (Martedì Grasso or Mardi Gras), the day before Ash Wednesday. The festival is world-famous for its elaborate masks.

The History of the Carnival of Venice

The Carnival of Venice began as a celebration of the victory of the Venice Republic against the Patriarch of AquileiaUlrico di Treven in 1162. When the people of Venice heard of this victory, they began to gather and dance in San Marco Square. In the 17th and 18th centuries the festival flourished, but under the rule of the Holy Roman Emperor and later Emperor of Austria, Francis II in 1797 the festival was outlawed entirely. During this time masks were forbidden. In the 19th century, the festival began to slowly resurface, primarily in the form of private feasts and artistic expression.

Finally, in 1979, the Italian government decided to revive the carnival as a method of increasing tourism, and the history and culture of Venice, including the art of traditional Venetian mask making, gradually began to resurface through the festival. Today more than 3 million visitors return to Venice each year to experience the magic and mystery of the Carnival.
